Asked to Be a Bridesmaid?

Getting asked to be a bridesmaid can be incredibly exciting, especially if it’s your first time. However, you might also feel a bit confused and overwhelmed, and that’s normal too. After all, you may feel unclear about what all you have to do or what your role entails. However, take a deep breath and relax. Being a bridesmaid is mostly fun with only a few responsibilities sprinkled in. Plus, it’s even easier if you know what to expect.

Your Role in the Wedding

Being a bridesmaid at a wedding is actually pretty simple. For the most part, you get walked down the aisle by a groomsman. Then, you stand near the bride and get a close-up view as she says, “I do.” Your role is more of an honor than anything!

However, leading up to the big day, you may have to put in some “work.” Typically, this comes in the form of supporting the bride at her dress fittings and other events and helping the maid of honor plan the bridal shower.

The Costs

A big question bridesmaids-to-be have is who pays for what. And, unfortunately, there are no one-size-fits-all answers. It really just depends. Some brides have the bridesmaids pay or at least pitch in for their dresses, any travel expenses, and getting hair and makeup done for the big day. Other brides will gift some or all of these things.

No matter what, it’s the bride’s responsibility to be upfront with you about any costs involved in the wedding. That way, you can make an informed decision about whether or not it’s financially viable for you.

The Fun

At the end of the day, all stresses aside, being a bridesmaid should be fun! You’ll get to be with a close friend or family member every step of the way as she prepares for a very special day. So, relax and try to have some fun. After all, unless you have a lot of best friends, this won’t be an experience that comes along all that often!

Now that you know a bit more about the role of bridesmaid, hopefully it feels less intimidating and more awesome. If you decide to say yes to the (bridesmaid’s) dress, then go all in and make it a memory you won’t forget!
