Should You Agree to Being a Bridesmaid?

When a friend asks you to be a bridesmaid, you may be thrilled. But, before you blurt out a big “yes,” stop and think. Being part of the bridal party isn’t all fun and games. It’s a responsibility too. In most cases, you’ll be expected to buy and pay for your dress, your hotel and travel costs, and a gift for the couple. You may also be asked to chip in on other expenses. So, don’t agree unless you feel comfortable doing everything that’s expected of you. If you’re on the fence, talking with your friend can help you make up your mind.

Know What’s Expected Of You

Every wedding is different. Not all couples follow tradition. So, if you have concerns about cost or responsibilities, ask your friend outright. They may be covering more or less than the average couple. Plus, you need to know how they see your role and what they want you to do and participate in. By getting all the details before giving your answer, you can avoid awkwardness, disappointment, or, even worse, having to drop out of the wedding.

Inquire About Travel

Make sure you know exactly where and when the wedding will be held before you commit to being a bridesmaid. If the couple doesn’t have all the details worked out yet, it’s okay to hold off on answering until they do. If you have to travel somewhere like Maui, for example, you’ll need to plan and budget for travel, lodging, time off work, and more. Even with a local wedding, there are still logistics to work out. So, you deserve all the info on the “when” and “where” before you owe anyone an answer.

Be Realistic

As much as you may want to agree to being a bridesmaid, be realistic and honest with yourself. If you really can’t afford it or don’t have the time, don’t be afraid to say no. A real friend will understand your answer and your reasons for it. Furthermore, if having you there is really important to the person, they’ll do whatever they can to help you make it happen.

Remember, at the end of the day, you’re the only one who can decide how you feel about the bridesmaid role. Do what’s right for you and what makes you comfortable. You matter too!
