Many people feel nervous about getting married. After all, there’s a reason the phrase “cold feet” was invented. If you’re one of them, don’t beat yourself up or let your nerves get the best of you. Know that some amount of nervousness is totally normal. Even better, there are things you can do to combat those jitters and still enjoy your big day.

Assess Yourself

First things first, before you start trying to get rid of the jitters, ask yourself where they’re coming from. Often, it’s from something small, such as not having all your plans in order or feeling unprepared in some way. If that’s the case, take care of the issue if you can and see if you feel better. However, you also have to ask yourself if something more serious is at play. Do you maybe have real doubts about the person you’re marrying? Those are the kinds of jitters you should pay attention to and that warrant some soul searching.

Get Away From It All

Whether you’re in the midst of wedding planning or literally about to walk down the aisle, it’s always okay to take a moment to yourself and just breathe. If you’re getting married somewhere beautiful, like Maui, take advantage of your surroundings. Step out on the beach and take a quick break. Sometimes, just a little quiet time and some positive self-talk can make the bad feelings melt away.

Let Go Of Perfectionism

Frequently, wedding jitters stem from pressure. And, a lot of the time, you put that pressure on yourself. If you have this perfect, idealized vision in your head and desperately want everything to go perfectly, you’re probably not going to have a good time before or after your wedding. But, if you let those perfectionistic tendencies go and just accept that everything probably won’t turn out completely perfect, you’re likely to feel a whole lot better.

Allow yourself to feel the way you feel. Shoving feelings down or denying them will only make things worse. Assess your feelings, and find positive, healthy ways to deal with them. That’s the absolute best way to get rid of a bad case of wedding nerves.
