How to Have a More Sustainable Maui Wedding

Are you and/or your partner environmentally conscious? If so, then why not let your passion for the environment infiltrate your wedding? It’s a great way to show your guests what you truly value, to encourage environmental responsibility, and to reduce your carbon footprint even on your wedding day. Best of all, it’s not even difficult to make your wedding more “green” and sustainable.

Reduce Waste Where Possible

A sustainable wedding means a wedding that doesn’t produce a lot of excess waste or, ideally, any.

You can reduce waste in a lot of different ways. Perhaps, for example, you could insist on reusable plates, cutlery, and other serving utensils. Or, you could use plates and cups that are biodegradable. There are even some compostable products, some of which contain seeds so that they add plants to the earth when they break down.

You might also have recycling or compost stations on site or put a ban on all plastic products at your wedding. Whatever you do to reduce waste, you’ll be making a difference, which is more than many couples can say on their wedding day!

Skip (or Donate) the Wedding Flowers

Many brides-to-be hate the idea of picking flowers just for their wedding bouquet, only to have them thrown out later. If you’re one of them, you could skip traditional wedding flowers to make an environmental impact. You could go for permanent faux flowers, or you could hold something else entirely, like a pretty upcycled “bouquet” that will serve as a souvenir and art-piece after your big day.

If you still want flowers but want to minimize negative impact, then donate your flowers after the wedding. You might be able to gift them to another bridal party or even to a charitable organization planning a big event.

Choose a Green Venue

If you want a more sustainable wedding but don’t want to put in a lot of work yourself, just choose a Maui wedding venue that’s committed to being green. This might be a solar-powered venue, one that uses locally-supplied food, or anything in between.

No matter how you choose to “go green,” it’s nice to know that you’re starting your marriage off in a way that shows true concern for the world around you.
